Gain Staging & Level Matching with Xvox

This article gives you a simple step-by-step approach to achieve a level-matched output with Xvox. This means that the output level of Xvox will be the same level as the incoming signal level. Following these steps can help you achieve proper gain staging in your mix in order to use Xvox at the ideal levels.

Step 1

Xvox operates best when your input signal is roughly -12dB. Adjust your microphone preamp -or- the Clip Gain of your audio region so that the Input Meters on Xvox are hitting roughly where the color changes from blue to yellow. Or, use the Input Knob to the left of the meters.

Step 2

Use the Module Trim knobs to adjust the output level of any individual module. If you notice that your settings for a particular module is adding a significant amount of gain, try adjusting this trim knob for that module:

Step 3

Adjust the Output Knob until the output meters are showing roughly the same level as the input meters.

By following these steps, you'll have total control over your gain staging throughout each stage of processing, as well as before & after Xvox.
